Fed: Govt considering funding AIDS campaign
Health Minister TONY ABBOTT says the federal government's considering a new awareness
campaign against HIV .. in the face of rising infection rates.
On the 20th anniversary of the original grim reaper campaign .. about a thousand Australians
are contracting AIDS each year .. compared with 650 a year five years ago.
Mr ABBOTT says the health department has received news of an increase in infections
.. and has asked the Ministerial Advisory Council to make some recommendations.
His comments follow calls for another AIDS campaign to teach young people of the dangers
of unsafe sex and sharing needles .. amid fears Australians are becoming complacent about
the risk of HIV.
