Paraguayan President to visit Mexico to negotiate Mercosur deal.

MEXICO CITY, Feb 11, 2005 (EFE/Corporate Mexico by Internet Securities, Inc. via COMTEX) -- The President of Paraguay, Nicanor Duarte, will travel to Mexico next March 7 to meet President Vicente Fox and talk about the negotiations between the North American nation and Mercosur, reported official sources.Leila Rachid, minister of Foreign Relations of Paraguay, which is currently holding the temporary presidency of the South American trade bloc, said in a press conference that the visit of Duarte to Mexico will last two days and will serve to activate talks over a free trade agreement between Mexico and Mercosur."He [Duarte] is going to Mexico and apart from fulfilling the bilateral agenda, he is also going to follow the Mercosur mandates to start talks on economic and commercial matters with a focus on a possible free trade agreement with Mexico," said Rachid.During the Puerto Iguazu summit in July last year Mexico formally requested to join Mercosur, which is formed by full members Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Mercosur recognizes the status of Mexico as an associate member in trade talks, but the process has been held up by difficulties during the talks. Other associate members are Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.
