FED: Smokers given reprieve with tobacco tax change delay
CANBERRA, Feb 3 AAP - Smokers of budget cigarettes have been granted a reprieve after
planned changes to the tobacco tax were today delayed to give manufacturers more time to
adapt.
Under the federal government's plans for a new 'per stick' tobacco excise, budget
cigarettes which usually come in bigger packets will become more expensive.
The government originally planned to make the change from July 1, 1999, but Treasurer Peter
Costello said today the plan had been delayed until November.
