RETAILERS HAVE STRONGER SALES.(BUSINESS)

NEW YORK -- U.S. retailers reported a better-than-expected 4.8 percent rise in October's sales at stores open at least a year, led by demand for clothing at chains such as Gap Inc., AnnTaylor Stores Corp. and Talbots Inc.

Same-store sales were expected to rise as much as 4 percent, following gains of 5.5 percent last month and 4.4 percent in August, according to Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd. Sales rose 4.8 percent a year ago.

The sales growth at apparel retailers and expected strong holiday demand at discount chains such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. could force department stores ``to liquidate inventory earlier than planned and …
