Qld:Landholders protest against power pylon plan

INNISFAIL, Qld, Aug 1 AAP - Private landholders angry at plans to erect power pylons
across their properties between Innisfail and Tully in north Queensland took their protest
to state cabinet today.

About 80 protesters gathered outside the Johnstone Shire Council chambers in Innisfail
where Premier Peter Beattie and his ministers were about to hold a community cabinet meeting.

Mr Beattie heard the group's concerns about the state government corporation Powerlink's
plans to abandon a 50-year-old line through world heritage rain forest in favour of a
coastal route across private and government land.

Group spokesman Nick Stipis said local landholders had been fighting Powerlink for
five years and had not been properly consulted.

He accused Powerlink of taking shortcuts with environmental impact assessments and
of using its corporate clout against small communities.

Mr Beattie told protesters the matter was out of his hands as the federal environment
minister had yet to decide on the suitability of the routes.
