Senior forecaster from the Bureau of Meteorology Terry Ryan said the temperature atMelbourne Airport had been -1 celsius at 6am.

But he said the wind temperature had hovered around the zero mark from 1am, which wouldallow a thick crust of ice to form on metal plane wings.

"I'm not surprised at all there was ice," Mr Ryan said.

He said these weather conditions occurred on average once or twice a year in Melbourne.
